The media have covered such recent events as the Olympics, the selection of Joe Biden as the Vice Presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, and what John McCain is going to do about the selection of the Vice President of the Republican Party. Now the media will focus on the national convention of the Democratic Party.

The most important news for the month of August was the fact that President Bush has quietly sent the largest armada into the Persian Gulf since the Iraq war began in 2003, when there were six carrier groups. This is a huge number of ships to be concentrated in one location in peacetime.

A Moment of Science

A podcast service consisting of 2 minute programs which tackles all sorts of scientific subjects presented as questions and answers like “How big a stick would you need to measure the planet?” or “Problems with turning yourself invisible”.

You can listen to their podcasts here or download their audio files here. You can also read their transcripts here.

They allow the listener to add to the list of subjects by sending questions to amos [at] indiana.edu which makes this service very beneficial.

Produced by Indiana University, Bloomington, in cooperation with IU’s scientific community, and scientists around the world.

Enough said! I’ve had a quick look and yes it does work. For those sleepless night when you’re bored and looking for some inspiration in the ears!

The other day I was listening to WFMU radio when they played a great tune by Big Blood. This tune had a the kind of warm/sweet but at the same time primal sound – hard to describe but I liked it an managed to track down some of their music on some of the more independant radio stations (WFMU and WMBR) and their myspace site.
