CGI-out, Yeast and Fluid Dynamics-In!

Special-effects wizard Peter Parks created the ethereal nebula shots (shown here) by photographing a few microliters of iodine and baby oil in his 400-year-old workshop:

‘The Fountain’ is the new film by Darren Aronofsky. Instead of using traditional CGI methods to create interstellar backdrops for his shots, they employed an English guy called Peter Parks master of the ‘microzoom optical bench’ to create backdrops using water, yeast and all kinds of crazy checmical reactions. Wired magazine have a full article on this.
